Heading 1: How Growing Up in The Bahamas Shaped My Love for Sailing and Boating
Okay y’all have been asking for a certain video for a while now and we are finally settled, the storm has passed, so we’ll see in the next few episodes. And it is a beautiful night, I’m going to go into my story a little bit. Let’s see, okay so we just dropped anchor and I think this is going to be one of the best chances I get to go over my story a little bit for you guys.
I’ve grown up coming to the Bahamas, a lot of you have asked what’s your history with sailing, what’s your history with boating, why the Bahamas, why Amano Hall, those are just a few of the questions I’ve been asked. And I’m trying to get out of the sun for you guys. I did grow up coming here, the first time I came here I was three or four months old. My parents and grandfather took a drawer from his condo and that is where I slept on the boat. So my grandfather came across a boat with two bedrooms and he started taking our whole family here to the Bahamas every single summer. It became kind of a tradition, we have a pretty big family and we were all really close, and it was just the time of our lives.
I looked forward to it every single year, it was the highlight of every single year. I just love it here so much and eventually, I think I was in middle school, and my mom mentioned if I were to go back to school I would choose marine biology. I grew up in Missouri and I didn’t even know that field existed. I knew I loved the ocean, I didn’t have anything I wanted to do when I grew up really, and she said that and it kind of triggered something, I was like that could be cool. So starting in eighth grade, we started looking at colleges for marine biology, I got to see a lot of different labs which is really cool and it was just really fun to go look at all the colleges.
I knew I wasn’t staying in Missouri, I did consider it for a brief moment due to cheerleading, but very brief. By my senior year in high school, I finally found my way a little bit more and I was taking a few online classes, environmental science, marine biology. I had a teacher in high school who taught advanced biology and it was actually more of a marine biology course. I just loved that course, we got to learn about so many things, I fell in love. And my senior year, I think I took that course my sophomore year and my senior year, I was doing seven classes, two of them were online, one was a homeschooled course so didn’t count towards my day and I did science research. I added that in a few weeks after the semester started and I got to do coral research in Missouri in high school in a lab, and I absolutely loved it. That year I applied to a lot of colleges and I was torn between a few, but I decided on Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale, my grandfather lived there, I’m a big homebody.
Heading 2: Discovering My Passion for Marine Biology and Pursuing It in College
My passion for marine biology started at a young age, thanks to my family’s traditions of visiting the Bahamas every summer. As a child, I would sleep on a boat with my family, and those trips became the highlight of my year. The crystal-clear waters, diverse marine life, and the sense of freedom I felt on the ocean captivated me.
It wasn’t until middle school that my mom mentioned the possibility of studying marine biology in college. Her words sparked something in me, and from then on, I became determined to pursue this field. Throughout my high school years, I took online classes and immersed myself in marine biology research, further solidifying my passion for the subject.
