1. The Challenges of Living Aboard a Boat: Sleepless Nights and Mosquito Infestations
Living aboard a boat comes with its fair share of challenges. One such challenge is the sleepless nights that can leave you feeling restless and exhausted. Imagine waking up to the annoying sound of mosquitoes buzzing in your ear, only to find yourself covered in itchy bites. It’s not exactly the peaceful and serene sleep one might expect on a boat.
But despite the lack of sleep, there is something inexplicably beautiful about waking up to the gentle rocking of the boat and the sound of waves lapping against the hull. It’s a reminder that you are fully immersed in the ocean life you’ve always dreamt of. As you step outside onto the marina, you take a quick walk to witness the breathtaking views and connect with the beauty of your surroundings.
Another challenge that commonly plagues boat dwellers is the constant battle with mosquito infestations. These tiny bloodsuckers can quickly turn your living quarters into a buzzing nuisance. You find yourself constantly swatting and killing mosquitoes, hoping to reclaim your space. The bites they leave behind serve as a reminder of their relentless persistence. It’s essential to find effective ways to deal with these pests, such as using mosquito nets, repellents, or keeping the boat well-ventilated. Despite the challenges, living on a boat offers a unique and remarkable experience for those seeking a sustainable and ocean-centered way of life.
2. The Journey to Puerto Rico: Delays, Setbacks, and a Haul-Out
I just spent my first night on my boat, and it was not quite the peaceful experience I had hoped for. I woke up to the annoying sound of mosquitoes buzzing in my ear, and now I’m swatting them away and dealing with the itchy aftermath of their bites. Needless to say, sleep is elusive at the moment. So, instead of tossing and turning, I decided to step outside and take a quick walk around the marina to see what’s happening.
For those of you who are new to my journey, my name is Lauren, and I am living aboard my 1993 Benito sailboat with my adorable kitten, Mako. I followed my heart from Missouri all the way to the Bahamas, with the dream of living a sustainable and fully immersed life on the ocean. I am so grateful to have you all following along and supporting me, especially my Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to me and makes this dream of mine possible.
Now, let me give you a little recap of the recent events. After much back and forth with the yard for what felt like an eternity, I finally made it to Puerto Rico and spent my first night there. You see, back in mid-August, during a sea trial, the engine on my boat decided to call it quits. I knew then that the boat would need to be hauled out for repairs. Fast forward to mid-November, and the boat was finally hauled out. However, progress was slow. When I asked about it, they hadn’t even taken the old engine out to put the new one in. Frustrated, I decided to take a break and visit my family in Joplin for two weeks.
Plans changed, as they often do, and the boat wasn’t ready until a few days later in early December. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise though, as the delay allowed me some extra time to pack and organize everything. Once I arrived in Fort Lauderdale, where my journey to Puerto Rico would begin, I realized just how much there was to do. I had to sort through all my belongings, figuring out what to take and what to leave behind. My two suitcases are packed, but I also have to deal with other items like my windlass.
Despite feeling a bit overwhelmed, I am determined to make this journey a success. I have ordered more parts for the boat’s engine, and I’m hopeful that everything will go smoothly. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a bit of a mess to tidy up before setting off on this adventure.
3. Overwhelmed but Determined: Packing Up and Preparing for the Voyage

A little recap of everything so far – I made it to Puerto Rico after many ups and downs with the boatyard. It took a while, but they finally hauled the boat out in mid-November. Unfortunately, they hadn’t even taken out the old engine to replace it yet. Frustrated, I decided to take some time off and visit my family in Joplin for a couple of weeks. Eventually, the boat was ready by the first week of December, which gave me the opportunity to pack up everything before flying to Fort Lauderdale. Let me tell you, packing up my entire life is overwhelming, but I’m determined to make it happen. Today, I’m supposed to fly out and begin the next chapter of this adventure.
